Strummerville returns to Glastonbury

Email this storyPrintable version

Strummerville returns to its natural home, Glastonbury, for this year's campfire sessions. Located in their usual spot by the Joe Strummer memory stone in the Unfair Ground, Strummerville will be burning their campfire all weekend long. Every night - Thursday until Sunday - the charity will present some great new talent and will be joined by established 'secret' bands for some very special intimate campfire sessions...

No bands will be announced, but with artists including Frank Turner, The Mystery Jets, The Drums, Lissie, I Blame Coco and Mariachi El Bronx performing around the campfire last year, you can get an idea of the people who want to come and tip their cap at the Joe Strummer memory stone and sing songs around the fire.

Joe Strummer first perfected his campfire backstage at Glastonbury, where the nightly assembly was first dubbed 'Strummerville'. Joe believed in the power of the campfire to connect people, to bring people closer, to lose themselves in the flames, as in the firelight everyone is equal, nobody more relevant than the next. More often than not, Joe was the last one at the fire. To whoever was left standing he'd say "it's you and me at Club Dawn"

Joe Strummer turned his festival campfire into a word-of-mouth institution, a gathering point for simpático spirits, a tradition joyfully maintained by Strummerville at Glastonbury. Check this Guardian online feature HERE

Strummerville have got some amazing surprises for you this year... The best way to find out who is playing at the Strummerville campfire is to swing during the day and see who is on their chalkboard for that night.

Katy Perry treats of her tour crew to spa visit

Email this storyPrintable version

The group took over the entire Remede Spa at the St. Regis Hotel in Atlanta on June 8 following her concert in the city, and the 'Firework' hitmaker footed the bill for facials and treatments.

Among the treats were a 90 minute facial at $255 and aromatherapy massages at $240 for over an hour.

They were also given warm paraffin foot wraps, foot and scalp rubs and eye and lip treatments, according to US Weekly.

The 26-year-old singer ' who is married to British comedian Russell Brand ' recently revealed she and her tour crew like to pray before they go on stage, and always dedicate the show to someone or something.

She said: ' have this little box of prayers, but they're very small, simple one-line prayers, and I pull them out and read them out loud, and everybody either agrees or disagrees with them, and then we put our hands in a pile and dedicate the show to something funny or stupid."

Lady Gaga is lining up a job in fashion when she is finished with music

Lady Gaga wants to work in fashion when she is finished with music.

The 25-year-old singer ' who is known for love of eccentric clothing, including a dress made of meat and one outfit of Kermit the Frog puppets ' has a great relationship with people in the fashion world and will one day create her own line of clothes, but not until she is bored with song-writing.

Speaking backstage at the 2011 MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto, Canada, she said: ' really, really have such admiration for fashion designers and I'm such good friends with them.

''d love a fashion line when I stop making music for a while, for a year. But that's not going to happen soon. I'm in love with song-writing right now.'

The 'Judas' hitmaker was recently named Fashion Icon at the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) awards, and she said at the event in New York she hoped young people would enjoy the prize as much as she would.

She said: 'All of you made me feel like a star before I was. As much as this award means to me personally, I just want you to know how much this means to young Americans.'

Email this storyPrintable version

The fashion designer and her husband David Beckham will welcome their first daughter into the world next month ' a sister for sons Brooklyn, 12, Romeo, eight, and six-year-old Cruz ' and preparations for the new arrival are almost complete.

A source said: The nursery is ready and is a girlie overload.

"It's very tasteful ' mostly cream with dashes of pink and every detail has been though of. The design is shabby chic with French inspired furniture. The baby will have the finest of everything."

As well as splashing out on furniture from exclusive baby boutique Petit Tresor, Victoria has also started shopping for designer outfits for her daughter.

The source added to Closer magazine: "Victoria splashed out £549 on a bassinet crib and bought a £1,584 changing table and a chaise longue. She also got three teddy bears.

"One of the stunning pieces is a £1,825 cream wardrobe with bunnies engraved into the frame, which she has already filled.

"She had already bought a few pieces in New York and online, such as a Kate Mack dress, plus she got lots of presents at her baby shower in May. She's so excited."

David and Victoria are said to have their name choices shortlisted to three but are refusing to disclose what they are.

The source said: "They've narrowed their names to three ' and they're keeping them a secret.

"Romeo wants to call her Justine Bieber, which is obviously off the list, but Brooklyn is a Beatles fan and suggested Jude, which David and Victoria actually like."

In Pictures: Hat to the trot at Royal Ascot Ladies Day

By Lauren Turner
Friday Jun 17 2011

The rain threatened to make Ladies' Day at Royal Ascot a wash-out — but dedicated followers of fashion refused to let the weather spoil their fun.

Extravagant hats were briefly covered by umbrellas and bold dresses with waterproofs until the sun eventually came out.

Some racegoers decided to pay tribute to the 300th anniversary of the famous Berkshire racecourse with their choice of outfit.

The Duchess of Cambridge's parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, took part in the traditional horse-drawn carriage procession for the first time, following the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the Royal family.

Mrs Middleton sat in the fourth carriage, wearing a pale taupe outfit and matching hat with lace detail.

The Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, was greeted by applause as she arrived.

The colour of her hat is always the subject of much speculation during the five-day meet. Yesterday she opted for coral, with green and coral trim, matching the colour of her suit.

Buckingham Palace said the Queen was wearing a pink and green silk printed dress and a raw silk coat, both by Stewart Parvin. Her straw hat, with flower detail, was created by Rachel Trevor-Morgan.

Once in the enclosure the Queen spent time talking to jockeys, but made a fairly swift exit when the rain became even heavier. Celebrities attending Ladies' Day included footballer Michael Owen, Dragons' Den star Peter Jones and Boyzone’s Shane Lynch.

Newly-knighted entertainer Bruce Forsyth was cheered as he arrived at Ascot with his wife, Wilnelia Merced, who wore a chic white skirt suit by Puerto Rican designer Harry Robles and a hat by Deida Acero.

Bruce said how proud he was of his recent honour, adding: “It's been busy. It hasn't stopped.”

The annual gathering is as much a social occasion as an event for betting punters.

Each year, the crowds consume some 170,000 bottles of champagne, around 10,000 lobsters, 5,000 oysters and 18,000 punnets of strawberries.
