Strummerville returns to Glastonbury

Email this storyPrintable version

Strummerville returns to its natural home, Glastonbury, for this year's campfire sessions. Located in their usual spot by the Joe Strummer memory stone in the Unfair Ground, Strummerville will be burning their campfire all weekend long. Every night - Thursday until Sunday - the charity will present some great new talent and will be joined by established 'secret' bands for some very special intimate campfire sessions...

No bands will be announced, but with artists including Frank Turner, The Mystery Jets, The Drums, Lissie, I Blame Coco and Mariachi El Bronx performing around the campfire last year, you can get an idea of the people who want to come and tip their cap at the Joe Strummer memory stone and sing songs around the fire.

Joe Strummer first perfected his campfire backstage at Glastonbury, where the nightly assembly was first dubbed 'Strummerville'. Joe believed in the power of the campfire to connect people, to bring people closer, to lose themselves in the flames, as in the firelight everyone is equal, nobody more relevant than the next. More often than not, Joe was the last one at the fire. To whoever was left standing he'd say "it's you and me at Club Dawn"

Joe Strummer turned his festival campfire into a word-of-mouth institution, a gathering point for simpático spirits, a tradition joyfully maintained by Strummerville at Glastonbury. Check this Guardian online feature HERE

Strummerville have got some amazing surprises for you this year... The best way to find out who is playing at the Strummerville campfire is to swing during the day and see who is on their chalkboard for that night.

Download the free Strummerville 'Songs For The Summer' album here: http://www.strummerville.com/songs-for-the-summer-2011/

CDs of the album will be given away free at the Strummerville campfire at Glastonbury.

Katy Perry treats of her tour crew to spa visit

Email this storyPrintable version

The group took over the entire Remede Spa at the St. Regis Hotel in Atlanta on June 8 following her concert in the city, and the 'Firework' hitmaker footed the bill for facials and treatments.

Among the treats were a 90 minute facial at $255 and aromatherapy massages at $240 for over an hour.

They were also given warm paraffin foot wraps, foot and scalp rubs and eye and lip treatments, according to US Weekly.

The 26-year-old singer ' who is married to British comedian Russell Brand ' recently revealed she and her tour crew like to pray before they go on stage, and always dedicate the show to someone or something.

She said: ' have this little box of prayers, but they're very small, simple one-line prayers, and I pull them out and read them out loud, and everybody either agrees or disagrees with them, and then we put our hands in a pile and dedicate the show to something funny or stupid."

Lady Gaga is lining up a job in fashion when she is finished with music

Email this storyPrintable version

Lady Gaga wants to work in fashion when she is finished with music.

The 25-year-old singer ' who is known for love of eccentric clothing, including a dress made of meat and one outfit of Kermit the Frog puppets ' has a great relationship with people in the fashion world and will one day create her own line of clothes, but not until she is bored with song-writing.

Speaking backstage at the 2011 MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto, Canada, she said: ' really, really have such admiration for fashion designers and I'm such good friends with them.

''d love a fashion line when I stop making music for a while, for a year. But that's not going to happen soon. I'm in love with song-writing right now.'

The 'Judas' hitmaker was recently named Fashion Icon at the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) awards, and she said at the event in New York she hoped young people would enjoy the prize as much as she would.

She said: 'All of you made me feel like a star before I was. As much as this award means to me personally, I just want you to know how much this means to young Americans.'

In Pictures: Hat to the trot at Royal Ascot Ladies Day

By Lauren Turner
Friday Jun 17 2011

The rain threatened to make Ladies' Day at Royal Ascot a wash-out — but dedicated followers of fashion refused to let the weather spoil their fun.

Extravagant hats were briefly covered by umbrellas and bold dresses with waterproofs until the sun eventually came out.

Some racegoers decided to pay tribute to the 300th anniversary of the famous Berkshire racecourse with their choice of outfit.

The Duchess of Cambridge's parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, took part in the traditional horse-drawn carriage procession for the first time, following the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the Royal family.

Mrs Middleton sat in the fourth carriage, wearing a pale taupe outfit and matching hat with lace detail.

The Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, was greeted by applause as she arrived.

The colour of her hat is always the subject of much speculation during the five-day meet. Yesterday she opted for coral, with green and coral trim, matching the colour of her suit.

Buckingham Palace said the Queen was wearing a pink and green silk printed dress and a raw silk coat, both by Stewart Parvin. Her straw hat, with flower detail, was created by Rachel Trevor-Morgan.

Once in the enclosure the Queen spent time talking to jockeys, but made a fairly swift exit when the rain became even heavier. Celebrities attending Ladies' Day included footballer Michael Owen, Dragons' Den star Peter Jones and Boyzone’s Shane Lynch.

Newly-knighted entertainer Bruce Forsyth was cheered as he arrived at Ascot with his wife, Wilnelia Merced, who wore a chic white skirt suit by Puerto Rican designer Harry Robles and a hat by Deida Acero.

Bruce said how proud he was of his recent honour, adding: “It's been busy. It hasn't stopped.”

The annual gathering is as much a social occasion as an event for betting punters.

Each year, the crowds consume some 170,000 bottles of champagne, around 10,000 lobsters, 5,000 oysters and 18,000 punnets of strawberries.

Celebrities & Crowdsourcing Back $2.2 Million Bid In Auction Of Marilyn Monroe Dress, Position SAVE-THE-DRESS As One Of Six Bidders In Record-Setting Hollywood Sale

NEW YORK, June 19, 2011 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — Just over a month ago, SAVE-THE-DRESS launched a first-ever crowdsourced campaign to acquire the coveted white dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in ‘The Seven Year Itch.’  Its ultimate mission: Send the dress on nationwide tour, then put it on permanent public display in New York — beyond the reach of those who would hide it in a private collection or cut it up and sell it off as bite-sized pieces of memorabilia. The results of that effort were put on display last night when the New York City-based group threw out a $1.1 million opening bid for the dress, before quickly moving the price up to $2.2 million.

In less than six weeks, SAVE-THE-DRESS, which is sponsored by Manhattan-based entertainment tech firm inQuicity, developed a compelling brand name, launched an effective website, leveraged a host of social media strategies, and held a celebrity-studded press conference at the very subway grate on which Monroe stood in ‘The Seven Year Itch.’  Featuring the actual back-up dress created by designer Travilla, the only exact duplicate in existence, that single press conference gave SAVE-THE-DRESS unprecedented global reach through the more than 1,500 print and broadcast stories it generated worldwide, in more than two dozen languages.

The campaign has been unique, distinguishing itself for its grounbreaking platform, agility in mobilizing $3.1 million in bidding power, and skill in drawing the support of celebrities from the world of film, fashion and entertainment.  More impressive has been its success in merging its visibility with the use of social media resources, including Facebook ads and social groups, to create an enormous and powerful global following that has transcended all language and geographic barriers.

When the hammer fell, the final bid on the dress was $4.6 million — a million and a half dollars beyond the reach of the SAVE-THE-DRESS campaign. While some might consider this defeat, the organization simply refers to it as the completion of Phase One.  Despite their impressive accomplishments, the group anticipated the possibility their effort at auction might not result in their casting the winning bid. The members of the volunteer organization point to a comprehensive plan and a diverse tactical coalition as evidence they’ve only just begun, and SAVE-THE-DRESS remains confident that the success of its mission is comfortably within reach.

While the obvious achievements SAVE-THE-DRESS has accrued in a month’s time are impressive, its larger successes are those not prominently featured on their website, including:

Amassing an army of SAVE-THE-DRESS evangelists, passionate about the cause and eager to participate in making history — who now have a channel to do just that.Cultivation of relationships with celebrities, industry insiders and key players in the world of film, fashion and entertainment, including enlisting the support & active participation of The Travilla Estate.Developing a powerful information network & access to a range of strategic resources, most notably a priceless collection of Marilyn Monroe’s dresses and personal items it has used in media outreach.Creation and validation of a revolutionary new auction bidding model, capable of leveraging a global following of ordinary citizens contributing a few dollars a piece into a compelling and mobile auction presence backed by millions of dollars in buying power.

It is this last item that SAVE-THE-DRESS put on inaugural display last night and that enabled it to wield $3.1 million in buying power in its bid for the coveted Monroe dress at the Debbie Reynolds auction. The organization is confident that this same strategy can be effectively utilized again, building on its results, to amass a larger bidding pool for even pricier items in the future.

“Through a global marketing campaign and the strategic use of social media resources, SAVE-THE-DRESS was able to promote awareness about and build support for our cause around the world,” said Darlene Newman, Director of the SAVE-THE-DRESS Campaign and CEO of project sponsor inQuicity.  “I want to thank everyone who helped make this extraordinary effort possible, including Andrew Hansford of the Travilla Estate and the Sanctuary Hotel in New York — and especially all of the individuals who contributed to the campaign and helped us spread the word around the globe.”

“Things of such cultural and historic importance as the ‘Seven Year Itch Dress’ become available so rarely and have traditionally been available only to the very few. We’ve demonstrated through SAVE-THE-DRESS that it’s possible for anyone to participate in auctions like this, ensuring that everyone can own a piece of a celebrated Hollywood costume and its glory — or virtually any object of historic or artistic importance”

SAVE-THE-DRESS notes the reach and effectiveness of its model was critical to securing the support of key allies, including Andrew Hansford of The Travilla Estate, who volunteered his expertise on the legendary white dress and assistance throughout the organization’s campign, and who made William Travilla’s priceless collection of Marilyn Monroe costumes available for the group’s press conference and fundraising events.

The appeal and international celebrity of Marilyn Monroe was also a key selling point that SAVE-THE-DRESS used to enlist the participation of prominent sponsors, including New York’s Sanctuary Hotel, which accommodated representatives from The Travilla Estate and provided secure housing of the priceless collection of Monroe-worn dresses during its visit from London. Sanctuary also provided on-site support yo the campaign’s June 1st press conference and Marilyn Monroe Celebrity Birthday Reception. Due in part to Sanctuary’s efforts, that press conference alone produced more than 1,500 print and broadcast stories worldwide.

Other businesses and organizations heeded the call to help protect the legend and legacy of Marilyn Monroe, including LOFT clothing, New York’s L’Entrecote restaurant and inQuicity, which is the driving force behind SAVE-THE-DRESS and conceptualized this first-ever foray into social media and crowdsourcing as a means to finance acquisition of the legendary Monroe dress.

Bottega Veneta Men’s Spring-Summer 2012

(PRWEB) June 19, 2011

For Spring Summer 2012, Bottega Veneta presents a men’s collection that contrasts surface and silhouette. Surface is treated extravagantly, enhanced and amplified with prints layered over prints, geometric patterns fused together, and materials mixed, patched, or cut apart and reformed. There are overprinted seersuckers and shirt checks, stripes atop stripes, linen- cotton twill printed to look like Irish tweed, elaborately patterned knits, and bleached, printed Japanese denim. In the end, the particulars of pattern and print become imprecise, rendering the surface of each garment graphically rich and wholly unfamiliar.

Juxtaposed to this opulent take on surface is a silhouette that is narrow, neat, and close to the body. The clothes, mostly suits, are precise and streamlined, with tapered pants, narrow shoulders, fitted sleeves, and a band or mandarin collar. Top and bottom are monochromatic. Jackets and the occasional shirt are worn buttoned all the way up to the neck, leaving little skin exposed. The effect is of a suit distilled to a single piece.

The palette for summer is quiet and warm, comprised of dark shades including espresso, chocolate, blue tourmaline, and indigo. These are offset by light, muted colors such as pewter, Sahara, sailcloth, and beige. Materials are lightweight and straightforward, ranging from cotton twill and linen- and-cotton twill to piqué, seersucker, denim, leather, and jersey. Shoes, reflecting the covered-up aspect of the clothes, are closed, unadorned, and understated. Two styles predominate: a refined but relaxed lace-up and a nonchalant backless slide. Multi-functional bags, many vertical in orientation, are precisely shaped but unconstructed so that they slouch and collapse comfortably against the body. Made of soft, faded leathers with a vintage feel, the bags feature elaborately hand-worked surfaces.

“I’ve always liked the idea of a coverall or a jumpsuit, of a single piece of clothing that works for a man the way a dress does for a woman,” explains Creative Director Tomas Maier. “But a tailored jumpsuit is impractical. So we started with the idea of an all-in-one and related it to the suit. The look is very sharp and covered up, with almost no skin revealed. This contrasts with the unusual surfaces of the materials. It’s a different kind of suit, derived from thinking about dressing in a different way.”

Lady Gaga has sent Kate Moss an accordion as a wedding present

The 'Judas' hitmaker and the supermodel - who is set to wed The Kills frontman Jamie Hince on July 1 - discussed how much they love the musical instrument when they met in May after Gaga performed at London's Annabel's club, and so the 25-year-old singer sent her new friend the unusual gift because she can't make the British beauty's forthcoming nuptials.

A source told the Daily Star newspaper: "Kate was so touched that Gaga sent her such a thoughtful present.

'Kate would have loved Gaga to be at the wedding, but because of her busy work schedule she can't make it.

'But Gaga is hoping to stay with Kate at her Cotswolds home later this year."

Meanwhile, the 'Poker Face' singer is set to go on a five-day promotional tour of Taiwan from July 1-5, and Taichung city's government is so excited about the popstar's forthcoming visit they have branded July 3 'Lady Gaga Day', and will present the eccentric star with the keys to the city at a party to welcome her.

Britney Spears' father is a 'hero' for getting her life back on track

Email this storyPrintable version

Jamie Spears has had joint control of the singer's affairs since her much-publicised meltdown in 2008, and with the 'Toxic' hitmaker beginning her 'Femme Fatale' tour this week, the conservatorship is expected to remain in place for the rest of the year.

A source told RadarOnline.com: "The conservatorship won't be ending this year because everything is going well.

"Britney is on tour again, which she truly loves. This would be the worst time to make a change, while she is on the road, and is in unfamiliar surroundings.

"There is just no reason for the conservatorship to end this year. The worst thing that could happen is that it ends, and Britney reverts back to her old ways, that would truly gut Jamie.

"The conservatorship will end when Britney is ready. She is making progress, this is the second tour that she has done in the past three years. These tours wouldn't have happened if Jamie hadn't stepped in and taken control of his daughter's life.

"Jamie is the hero here, he gave up his life to save his little girl."

Despite Britney being "comfortable" with not having control of her affairs, the insider admits the 29-year-old star ' who has sons Sean Preston, five, and Jayden James, four, from her marriage to Kevin Federline ' still clashes with her father.

The insider added: "Britney is very comfortable with having the conservatorship in place. Is it ideal? No, but she now knows how fragile her mental health is, and that her dad Jamie, truly only wants what is best for his little girl.

"Do they fight? Absolutely! However, there is a lot of love there. Britney is very much in love with her boyfriend, Jason Trawick, and her sons will be with her on tour as well."

Gaga ' who got together with Luc again in July 2010 after they had a break from each other ' announced she was single during an appearance on British TV series 'The Graham Norton Show'.

She said: "No, I don't have a boyfriend and haven't been on any dates recently."

The 25-year-old singer wrote the song 'You and I', which features on her global chart-topping album 'Born This Way', about 30-year-old Luc and admitted in the wake of the break-up performing the track makes her emotional.

She explained: "There is not one song on any of my records that wasn't written by me, and I think when you write your own music you find ways to reinvent [the songs] emotionally through yourself and performance so that they are different every night and that song you know, sometimes it's about the guy and sometimes it's about the fans."

Josie Gibson: I'll be filming at Big Brother auditions so do your hairThe BB star is getting involved in the show

Josie Gibson is looking for the next Big Brother winner

Josie Gibson is heading to the auditions for the new 2011 series of Big Brother today.

But the Big Brother 11 winner won't be vying to get back into the house - she'll be going to meet would-be contestants with a cameraman instead.

'BIG BROTHER Auditions are at Emirates stadium Saturday, I can't wait to meet you all. I'll be filming so make sure u do your hair. X,' Josie, 26, Tweeted on Wednesday.

The first round of auditions for the show, which will air for the first time on Channel 5 later this summer, kicked off in Manchester last week and move down to London today and tomorrow.

The hopefuls will move in to the house in Elstree, Hertfordshire, which is currently under refurbishment to give it a brand new look.

'For the house to work it has to have a mixture of characters,' Executive Producer Katy Smith tells the Daily Express.

'We are trying to make it a bit more authentic and would love to find a few more naïve characters, who are not all about fame and money.

'Our message this year is "be yourself".'

Christine Bleakley shows off her HUGE £120,000 diamond engagement ring

Christine Bleakley shows off her HUGE £120,000 diamond engagement ringThat's what you call a rock! Frank does Christine proud

Frank Lampard and Christine Bleakley have arrived back in the UK

Daybreak presenter Christine Bleakley and new fiancé Frank Lampard have flown back into Heathrow after their romantic holiday in the US, visiting Las Vegas and LA.

The pair was all smiles as they arrived at Terminal 3 and Christine showed off the sparkler on her third finger, left hand - a huge solitaire with a band of smaller diamonds, believed to have cost Frank £120,000.

Still, the footballer can afford it.

The Chelsea and England star proposed while the couple were having lunch on the beach - and it was a total shock.

'He started to build up to it and he got a little bit lovey-dovey,' says Christine, 32.

'I realised what he was about to do so I started to cry. I started to cry for about 10 minutes and then he pulled the ring out and said, "Will you marry me?"

'It wasn't very glamorous, it wasn't very fancy.

'It was very personal, very private actually...it was completely out of the blue.'

Frank, 32, has two daughters with former fiancée Elen Rivas.

Ashley Jensen played Christina McKinney in Ugly Betty

Look away now, Cheryl Cole - Ugly Betty star Ashley, 41, is one Brit who has cracked America.

The talented Scot starred in Ugly Betty as Christina McKinney and voiced Nanette the frog in the animated production Gnomeo And Juliet.

Ashley loves hanging out in LA.

'I have Hollywood royalty Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie living right next to me,' she tells us, 'but I've fought off the urge to go over and try to borrow a cup of sugar.

'It's
hard to know where the famous people live because all their houses are
nestled away from prying eyes, but pretty much everyone over here is in
the entertainment industry.

'You can't walk into a Starbucks without hearing someone talking about the amazing script they're working on.'

Ashley bumps into stars all the time.

'Celebs really are everywhere and I still don't think I've got used to it,' she admits.

U2 guitarist the Edge loses bid for Malibu mansion

By Alex Dobuzinskis

LOS ANGELES | Fri Jun 17, 2011 12:37am EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A plan by U2's lead guitarist, the Edge, and his associates to build several mansions overlooking the Pacific Ocean was denied on Thursday by California officials, who said the project would be a visual blight on a pristine ridgeline.

The California Coastal Commission, which voted 8-4 to reject the controversial 156-acre project, also cited potential damage to native vegetation near the seaside enclave of Malibu.

The Edge, whose real name is David Evans, bought the ridge-top parcel of land for his proposed home in 2005 and has since been fighting to win approval for the development.

A spokeswoman for the Edge said the guitarist and his associates were weighing a potential lawsuit and other options to revive the project.

The Edge had touted the proposed complex of mansions as an environmentally sustainable undertaking that would boast such features as solar energy panels, a rainwater catchment system and on-site electric vehicle charging.

The musician and his associates also said the five homes they were planning to build would collectively occupy just over 1 acre of the 156 acres of private land they had purchased for the development.

Officials with the California Coastal Commission argued the proposal was deceptively presented as five separate developments even though the Edge was the single driving force behind it.

The commission also noted the other principals behind the project were closely tied to the Edge, and included his sister and his business partner.

Environmentalists had opposed the development, saying it would mar views of the ridgeline for over a mile along the coast, a fact cited by commission staff.

Malibu City Councilwoman Laura Rosenthal told Reuters that many of her constituents would agree with the commission's decision.

"Absolutely it's been a big issue, and people have been talking about it and are concerned about it," she said.

Fiona Hutton, a spokeswoman for the Edge, said California officials have approved dozens of other similar projects in the area.

"We'd like to be treated fairly, like any other applicant that comes before the Coastal Commission," she said.

"Green Lantern" emerges from obscurity; critics pounce

By Edwin Chan

LOS ANGELES | Fri Jun 17, 2011 8:03am EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The universe has probably never been safer if the proliferation of comic book superheroes on the big screen is any indication.

Marvel adventures "Thor" and "X-Men: First Class" have sold nearly $800 million worth of tickets combined at the worldwide box office in recent weeks, and "Captain America" is getting ready for a July 22 release across North America.

Stepping into the breach Friday is "Green Lantern," starring Ryan Reynolds as the ring-wielding intergalactic space cop immortalized in D.C. comic books.

The $150 million Warner Bros. picture tells the story of Earth's first member of the Green Lantern Corps and his maiden task -- to beat back and defeat mega-villain Parallax, a planet-killing entity that thrives on fear.

Blake Lively co-stars as his love interest, while Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong are on board as villains.

The film's director, Martin Campbell, who rebooted the James Bond franchise with the gritty "Casino Royale," acknowledges that the "Green Lantern" is a lesser-known member of the D.C. comics pantheon, but so what?

"We had a little bit more work to do," Campbell told reporters recently. "It wasn't in as many people's consciousness as Superman or Batman may have been."

But "Iron Man was a second-tier (Marvel comics) character that turned out very well," he points out. "Whether a superhero is second-tier or first-tier is irrelevant ... The movie has to stand alone."

"CLUTTERED CHAOS"

Early "Green Lantern" reviews were overwhelmingly negative. The New York Observer said the film was "a dumb, pointless, ugly, moronic and incomprehensible jumble of botched effects, technical blunders and cluttered chaos."

In slightly more measured tones, Variety said the "visually lavish sci-fi adventure" was "a highly unstable alloy of the serious, the goofy and the downright derivative."

Still, bullish sources at Warner Bros. expect the film to gross at least $50 million during its first three days of release in the United States and Canada. That would put it in the same range as "X-Men: First Class," which opened to $55 million earlier this month and has grossed $104 million to date.

The critics were generally kind to Reynolds, who was last seen by a handful of people trying to escape a coffin in "Buried." He seemed a natural choice to play a character less riven by internal demons than recent movie superheroes have tended to be.

As hot-shot fighter pilot Hal Jordan, the 34-year-old Canadian actor -- who has a fear of flying -- lent a casual wisecracking charm to a guy given the modest challenge of saving the universe.

"A lot of the current iterations of superheroes are a little bit darker and serious in tone," Reynolds told reporters in a recent interview. "This is a bit of a throwback. There's a lot of fun in the character."

So much fun that there is inevitable talk of a sequel. Indeed, viewers who sit through the credits at the end will learn which character becomes a villain in the next episode.

Lively joked she'd like to play the villain next. Strong, who co-stars as Green Lantern Corps leader Sinestro, said he played up certain personality traits that might eventually push his character to the dark side -- as happened in the comics.

Those little teasers hint at the degree of thought that may have gone toward a second installment, even before the opening credits roll on the first.

But if a sequel does not get the green light, Reynolds will get a fresh crack at fanboy glory in yet another obscure comic-book adaptation headed to the big screen. He is attached to reprise the villainous role of Deadpool in a spin-off of the "X-Men: Wolverine" spin-off.

Debbie Reynolds selling historic movie costumes

LOS ANGELES | Fri Jun 17, 2011 2:14pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - If you ever wanted to relive the movie scene in which Marilyn Monroe's dress is blown upwards by a burst of air, you will get a chance on Saturday when her gown from "The Seven Year Itch" goes on auction.

Expect to fork over at least $1 million to $2 million for the ivory rayon-acetate halter dress with pleated skirt, one of about 500 wardrobe items being offloaded by actress and lifetime collector Debbie Reynolds at a Beverly Hills sale.

The so-called "subway grate" dress is the jewel in a collection that includes costumes previously worn by the likes of Grace Kelly, Natalie Wood, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Marlon Brando, Julie Andrews and Madonna.

And Mike Myers. One of his shagadelic "Austin Powers" combos, a groovy blood-orange number, is on the block for a relatively modest estimate of $6,000 to $8,000.

Reynolds, 79, has been collecting costumes since her early days as a contract actress at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, where she spent her spare time in the wardrobe department watching the artisans create movie history with needles and thread.

When the cash-strapped Hollywood studios started selling off their movie props in the 1970s, Reynolds presciently scooped up the best items. She used her connections to buy many items before they went on auction.

The dream was to display the 3,000-odd costumes in a museum, but that never came to fruition. A planned project in Tennessee went bankrupt in 2009, and a heartbroken Reynolds was forced to sell her beloved collection to pay back creditors. Several sales are planned.

"As I turn these precious items over to the auction, my wish is that they will find homes where they will be revered and preserved along with their history," Reynolds said.

Among the items are nine dresses that Reynolds wore in such films as "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," "How the West Was Won" and "Singin' in the Rain."

Prices for entertainment memorabilia have not been affected by the recession, so many of the estimates will likely be easily exceeded. Perhaps the real test of buyers' appetites will be what amounts to a heap of dirty rags: a tattered brown robe worn by Charlton Heston in "Planet of the Apes" is expected to fetch $8,000 to $12,000.

Also up for grabs at the Profiles in History sale are:

- Monroe's red-sequined dress from "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" ($200,000 to $300,000);

- Hepburn's Cecil Beaton-designed Ascot dress from "My Fair Lady" ($200,000-$300,000);

- replicas of Judy Garland's blue cotton dress ($60,000-$80,000) and ruby slippers ($120,000-$150,000) used in test shots for "The Wizard of Oz";

- an elaborate coronation costume worn by Brando in "Napoleon Bonaparte" ($60,000-$80,000);

- the "Do-Re-Mi" dress worn by Andrews in "The Sound of Music" ($40,000-$60,000);

- Kelly's rose crepe outfit from "To Catch a Thief" ($30,000-$50,000);

- an ivory military suit worn by Claude Rains in his Oscar-nominated "Casablanca" role as Captain Louis Renault ($12,000-$15,000);

- Taylor's brown period dress from "Raintree County" ($10,000-$15,000);

- Madonna's black evening gown and shoes from "Evita" ($4,000-$6,000);

- Wood's real-life high-school graduation dress ($2,000-$3,000).

Susan Boyle story to be turned into musical

LONDON | Fri Jun 17, 2011 7:08pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Scottish singer Susan Boyle, who shot to stardom in 2009 when her performance on a television singing contest became an internet hit, will see her life portrayed on stage in a new musical.

"I Dreamed a Dream," named after the title of the song she sang that made her an overnight celebrity, will tour internationally from 2012 after premiering at Theater Royal in Newcastle, England, on March 23.

"I never thought my life story would end up on the stage but a lot has happened in two years and it is a very exciting prospect," Boyle said.

"I hope everyone enjoys the show and I promise there will be a few surprises along the way," she added in a statement.

Boyle will be played by actress Elaine Smith, best known for her role in the British comedy series "Rab C Nesbitt" and a favorite of the singer.

Boyle's rendition of I Dreamed a Dream was viewed some 300 million times on the YouTube video sharing site, and within days she was a global singing sensation.

Under the tutelage of music producer Simon Cowell, who was a judge on "Britain's Got Talent" when Boyle performed, she has gone on to record two albums and sell some 14 million copies.

Producer Michael Harrison said of the show: "It's got all the qualities of a fairytale, but with the added bonus of being absolutely true."

According to the Daily Telegraph, a 26-week tour of the Britain, the United States and Australia has been lined up so far.

Russell Brand, Beyonce invited to be Oscar voters

LOS ANGELES | Fri Jun 17, 2011 4:21pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Even after struggling to establish himself as a Hollywood leading man, raunchy English comedian Russell Brand has been invited to become an Oscar voter.

He is among 178 actors, filmmakers and other Hollywood notables invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization said on Friday.

Brand was most recently in theaters with a critically mauled remake of "Arthur," which grossed just $33 million at the North American box office. Last year he was seen in "The Tempest" ($280,000) and "Get Him to the Greek" ($61 million).

Also on the list are R&B singer and occasional actress Beyonce Knowles, "Hangover" star Bradley Cooper, the husband-and-wife duo of David Duchovny and Tea Leoni, and a crop of 2011 Oscar nominees including Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Jennifer Lawrence and Australian actress Jacki Weaver.

Tom Hooper, who won the best director Oscar this year for "The King's Speech," was among the eight directors invited. Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier whose "In a Better World" won for foreign-language film, also made the cut, as did Aaron Sorkin, the Oscar-winning writer of "The Social Network."

In a symbolic gesture, the list includes "Restrepo" co-director Tim Hetherington, who was recently killed during the Libya uprising.

The academy said its voting membership has held steady at just under 6,000 people since 2003.

Blake Lively Covers Up With Chanel Couture

While it's certainly a stunning gown, is it too bridal for a movie premiere? Especially since the movie in question involves battling evil while wearing a shiny green ring?

Best Bet: Passione Nail Lacquer

At the height of mani-pedi season, Dolce & Gabbana introduces a new nail shade, Passione, in its Italian Summertime collection. Part of a continued makeup collaboration with Pat McGrath, the high-impact polish is a purple-tinged magenta — it looks like a rich rose or a deep mauve, depending on the light — a welcome contrast to the nail salon's typical range of shocking pinks. Though it's splurgier than drugstore brands, the lacquer's thick consistency, high-shine finish, and chip-free lasting power puts it on par with polishes from Chanel or Dior.

Prada’s Official Share Price Is Lower Than Expected

Photo: Antony Dickson/AFP/Getty Images

After a month of wining, dining, and putting on elaborate fashion shows for potential investors around the world, Prada announced their stock price in Hong Kong today: it'll be 39.50 Hong Kong dollars, or $5.06 per share. The company's IPO plans apparently suffered from a number of adverse factors, mainly that it's been a crappy week for the Hong Kong market. There has also been a lack of retail demand because of the high taxes involved: Hong Kong residents purchasing shares of Prada, or any other Italian company, are required to pay a 27 percent dividend tax as well as 12.5 per cent capital gains tax on any shares they sell in the future.

Prada will reportedly raise $2.14 billion from the IPO deal, which is much lower than last week's estimate of $2.6 billion. Hong Kong market researcher Castor Pang said that Prada overestimated its worth from the start. "Even the power of international branding cannot make the deal attractive and give it a higher valuation," he told WWD, noting that Prada's valuation is still higher than many other luxury companies, including LVMH. He predicts that the listing will fall even further on its first day of trade next Thursday, June 23.

Lawyer for Alleged Tupac Shooting Mastermind Denies All Charges

Dexter Isaac made a major admission yesterday: referring to an incident in Manhattan in 1994, the inmate said he was hired to rob Tupac Shakur.

Currently serving a life sentence for murder, Isaac also claimed music executive James Rosemond paid him $2,500 to carry out the deed.

Now, Rosemond's attorney, Jeffrey Lichtman, is speaking out against the charges.

"How anyone can take this animal's word as true without any corroboration at all is frankly beyond me," he told E! News. "[Isaac] is a guy who is a convicted psychotic killer, who is currently serving a life sentence without parole."

Lichtman says Isaac is conjuring up these allegations in a "desperate attempt to get out from under his sentence."

Tupac would have turned 40 years old today. It somehow seems apt that more controversy surrounding his life would come up on his birthday.
