It was clear last night that host Neil Patrick Harris knows how to throw quite the awards show. Opening the 2011 Tony Awards with a number about Broadway not being just for gay people anymore, NPH kept the mood light with a 30-second segment devoted to making as many Spiderman jokes as he could, a show-tune medley battle versus Hugh Jackman over who was the better Tony host, and a closing re-cap rap that had us all laughing. Hollywood made an appearance on the red carpet with big names coming out in support and for nominations! Christie Brinkley, Al Pacino, Jon Cryer, and Alec Balwin were just some of the stars spotted entering the Beacon Theatre.

As far as the actual awards went, “The Book of Mormon” received 9 Tony’s, including Best New Musical. Nikki M. James won for Best Performance by an Actress in a Feature Role in a Musical for “The Book of Mormon” and had us in tears, refusing to leave the stage until she was finished thanking her family. Also a big winner last night was “War Horse”, walking away with 6 Tony’s, most notably for Best New Play.

Another speech that was made amidst tears was for Best Actress in a Musical. Sutton Foster had a near breakdown on stage while accepting the award for Anything Goes once she mentioned how her dresser was going to be leaving to pursue the life of an artist. Some one pass us the Kleenex!
